DIGDEEP
More than 2 million Americans still don't have a tap or a toilet at home. We’re a non-profit organization working to ensure that every American has water and sanitation access forever.

U.S. WASH SECTOR DATABASE

More than 2.2 million Americans lack access to running water or basic plumbing at home. That’s too big of a problem for any organization to tackle on its own.

Building a New Tool

We believe the U.S. needs a WaSH (water, sanitation & hygiene) Sector, where diverse organizations join forces with impacted communities to close the Water Gap forever. So we built this database of implementers, funders, academics, community champions, government agencies and more—all committed to improving water and sanitation access across the country. By open sourcing this data and keeping it up-to-date, we hope to foster knowledge-sharing, research, strategic coordination, and most importantly, collaboration to bring impacted Americans the clean, running water we all deserve.

DATABASE FAQs

What is the purpose of this database, and how is the information organized?
We’ve assembled this brief overview of the project that explains key terms and outlines the way we organized this data. Have a look.
How was this data collected?
We developed this list through networking, partner introductions, and exhaustive research. We contacted each contributor and asked them to complete a survey or interview, where we gathered information to better understand their unique approach and how it might contribute to a US WaSH Sector. Before publication, we allowed each contributor to review their entry, ensuring the information was detailed and accurate. For the few contributors that did not complete a survey or interview, we filled out an entry for them, using publicly available information. This database is an ever-growing resource and we encourage organizations not originally included to contact us with their details to see if they would be a good fit.
How do you determine who should be included in the database?
This database includes organizations (of all kinds!) that improve access to water and sanitation for the 2.2 million Americans without it. Since the focus of this database is on the human right to water, we don’t include entities that have a solely environmental or sustainability focus (e.g., ecosystem remediation).
Can I link to this website on my organization’s blog or social media?
Yes! This database is a dynamic public resource shared under a Creative Commons license, and we want it to be shared widely. By sharing the database, you may help us reach other contributors that we may have not connected with originally. Perhaps by sharing, you’ll spark a new connection that results in clean, running water! You can share this database using the links at the top of this page.
Why does the US need it’s own WaSH Sector?
We have strong opinions on that. Read more here!

Sign the Pledge

I believe every American has a human right to clean, running water.

I believe in an America where every family can clean their hands, bodies and homes.

I believe American families shouldn’t have to choose between buying clean water or putting food on the table.

I believe that tribal nations, rural communities and people of color deserve running water.

I believe young Americans shouldn’t have to drive to truck stops to use the bathroom or take a shower

Give clean, running water.
